Cathie: I have copied part of the text of my email to you, so that others can read about the effect your talk had on me. I was so impressed by your > talk, quite moved by it actually, and I think your story is one that many > will want to hear. The notion of focussing on the positive, life-affirming, > creative aspects of one with Alzheimer's, rather than dwelling, as most do, > on the negative side, is a brilliant idea. Of course, that is easy for me > to say, as I have (fortunately) not had to look after or even deal in any > way with anyone so afflicted. But still, your voice, and that of your > mother's, is a lens through which we can see a beautifully human and humane > side of life. We simply do not take the time in our harried world to > reflect, to be patient, and to see life -- in all of its glory and > difficulty -- as the wonder that it is. In your talk, and in your books, > you are sharing something profoundly personal, yet extremely important for > others to witness. And for that we should all be very grateful.

Cathie, re your speech at the recent UWaterloo MAREP birthday celebration: Your one-woman dialogue with your Mom was inspired! You gave her such a gift...the dignity of being who and where she was at that moment. It was a powerful reminder of how far we have come in our thinking about Alzheimer's since Ken initiated the MAREP project 15 years ago. Thank you for your thoughtful insights!

Hello Cathie, As a volunteer working with those affected by Alzheimer's, I was interested in hearing your message. Sharing your personal journey with your mother is inspiring. The path you took in allowing your mother to lead the conversation adds a new dimension in how to effectively communicate with those affected by this dsease. You have a wonderful gift in the way you presented your story and I am thankful that I was in attendance at the University of Waterloo to hear it.

Cathie - I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you during your visit to MAREP at the University of Waterloo. The story told, of you and your mother's journey through Alzheimer's - the Long Hello - was moving, emotional and most inspiring. Your lesson of "following, while your mother lead" will enrich many relationships faced with this disease. We can, and all will, learn from your personal journey. Thank you for sharing it.

I really would like to read your book. My mom is in the moderate stages of early onset Alzheimer's. It has been a heart breaking experience, that I hope to find joy in your words..
